Somehow a squid found its way into my main character's nightmare. Must be the power of suggestion from this forum thread.

"In his waking he could not really get his mind around what the scary things were, monsters of some kind, he thought. He had glimpses in his mind, here yellow eyes, there something slinking across the floor, fangs bared in the next room, around the bend a deranged squid with tentacles reaching for him, things creeping and things crawling, always just out of sight, just past recollection as he slowly woke up. But always the screaming, the screaming that he felt in his bones, the cries not of terror so much but of pain, real agony, real suffering and definitely his sister, definitely his sister."

Oh no, oh no! It just slipped out. A second reference in my novel. How could it happen?

"Aster selected a squid pate hors doeuvres from a passing server before continuing,"

Alas this could become an epidemic!

hehe squid :D I ought to be able to do it since my story is about Witches familiars (it wasn't supposed to be that, it just happened as I was writing). I can make one a squid at some point but, it may be awhile, they aren't near water yet. But it seems like fun, thanks :)

Another squid sighting in "Yes, Or?"

Quote:
"That wasn't my dream," Kurt said.

"It wasn't?" She frowned. "But you said you dreamed about a Poetry Slam, didn't you?"

"Yes, but it was just high schoolers."

"Hmm, I guess I must have dreamed about the little kids." She sipped her coffee. "Did you dream about squids or was that me?"

Kurt laughed. "I don't think it was me. Although I think one of the high schoolers in my dream recited Humpty-Dumpty."

Another book, another squid!

This is from French Consequences:

Quote:
She picked up breaded mushrooms, then debated between frozen tilapia and frozen squid. She knew a good recipe recipe for tilapia, but the package was too large for one person. She handed the squid to her brother.

My character ate some calamari earlier in the novel... does that count???

What about if something was described as LOOKING squid-ish?

Ah, here we go my tribute to you:

What type of squid do they use to make Calamari anyway? Mathis asked picking up one of the crunchy tentacle pieces and inspecting it before popping it into his mouth. I mean they are so tiny, when I think squid I think the legendary Giant Squid.
I dont know, I said in an exasperated tone of voice, what kind of question was that? Im a rockstar, not a fucking microbiologist. Besides, I thought calamari was octopus.
Arching a tawny eyebrow at me he replied, Dont you mean marine biologist?
Whatever, man.

". . . on the floor was a squid toy. It was stuffed with some type of cotton-y fluff and had a squeaker in each of its eight legs and one in the body-head of the creature. The coyote sniffed it."

In French Connections, I have a secret project that one of my MC's is working on. I temporarily named it Dragon because of an IM session with Larkk in October when she was talking about her novel and she has DRAGN. When I needed a code name, I used Dragon, knowing I would change it.
While in the car on the way to Ohio, I mused out loud what I should change it to. Barry said, "Squid."
Duh!

So, my code name for a secret software project is Squid. Which means Squid is used in the novel dozens of time. This has to be worth extra cookies or something.

Oh, no, not again. It just slipped out. Number three reference in my novel!

Jenn chose the salad while her grandfather to fried calamari in jalapeo cheddar sauce.

This is getting addictive! Here's my fourth reference to the sea creature:

When you were ready. David stabbed a calamari ring and chewed vigorously.

What is the world coming to?

NewMexicoKid

Ok. Took me a while to work this scene into the novel. Here goes:

NewMexicoKid wrote:
After a full morning of fun rides, they headed over to the Japanese pavilion at
Epcot. Once or twice, looking up in the sky, David thought he saw the faint outl
ine of a giant paperclip.

At the Japanese pavilion, they enjoyed their lunch at a private table for two.

"I'm really happy to be here with you," Laurie said.

"Would you care for some calimari? It's great on a hibachi."

"Isn't calimari squid?"

David nodded. "But it sounds more edible that way."

Laurie chuckled. "I have to confess I've never eaten squid before, but I'm willi
ng to give it a try, just for you."

The chef came out with a portable hibachi station. Laurie loved the show, with t
he chef tossing around eggs with great facility.

"I can't believe you're juggling five eggs," David murmurred.

The chef winked at him.

The calimari was cooked as two flat, white pads and sliced into bite sized piece
s just before being served with teriyaki sauce.

"This is just delicious," Laurie said. "Thanks so much for broadening my culinar
y experiences, David!"

I didn't even realize this was a challenge and managed to work squid into my novel today during a word war. Please pardon the terrible writing.

"The server had come back out and dropped some sashimi and calamari on our table, but my appetite had been temporarily suppressed with an intense urge to do approach him. I wanted to get up and cross that line that we were both afraid to approach in that moment. "

FINALLY!

My plot is taking MUCH longer to get off the ground than I anticipated, and so my characters' epic battle against the endangered squid they're not allowed to kill might NOT get written in November... BUT! I managed to get a couple of characters to allude to the squid situation while they discuss how bad things are in the area they're supposed to sort of police. With the way it's presented here, the reader will think the squids are very problematic predators that are getting out of control... Until, of course, the characters are attacked and aren't allowed to do too much in the way of defending themselves.

But ANYWAY! Here it is! Feel free to laugh at the character names and random species names I've been having such fun with:

Hannah, Id like you to stay here, please, Karen said as Troy and Bunny closed the door behind them. The sword immediately tried to leave her hands, and she tightened her grip on it as she dropped her calm faade in exchange for a far more grim expression. I dont like this, she solemnly told Hannah, and she sat down on Troys bottom bunk to keep the sword cradled across her lap.

Hannah nodded solemnly. Its strange, she said.

I suspect its related to what youve been telling me about Division 17 lately, Karen said grimly. Youre certain its gotten that much worse?

Hannah nodded again, faint lines creasing across her face. Its amazing I havent found any new Exposed there yet, she said quietly. The number of walths in Chicago must have doubled this month, at least, and the maffews have built nests on almost all the high rises. And then the squids She shook her head and sighed.

I didn't exactly put a squid in my novel, but I did liken the black haze surrounding my antagonist to squid's ink suspended in water (the way it dances and curls about before dissipating)! Does that count? :D

I so heavily approve of all of these references. Now I just need to find a way to get cookies to allll of you.

TRRDEDEAN

Mercy! I must be addicted to squid. Reference number 5!

This used to be the dolphin preserve. David said as he walked leaning on his cane. And that was the squid preserve. Without this operation neither of the species would be alive on Earth today. Englund was not only instrumental in saving the species but in purifying the oceans of the pollutants destroying the marine life.

Forgive me, I just can't help it!

Dave
