I also posted this in the Appellation Station, but I figured I would post it here as well.
I am writing a fantasy novel where magic is based on 10 different elements. 9 of the elements are easily named.
They are:
1. Earth
2. Wind
3. Fire
4. Water
5. Light
6. Shadow
7. Frost
8. Metal
9. Wood
The 10th element is based on electricity. But I am having trouble coming up with a good name for it. "Electricity" is too cumbersome of a word, while "Electric" is an adjective. I'm looking for a noun.
Here are ones that I've thought of:
Lightning - too similar to Light, another element.
Spark - what I'm currently working with, though I'm not too fond of it.
Surge - there is a character named Surge, so that would be confusing.
Spark
Volt - a possibility, I suppose
Shock
Nothing sounds right to me. Nothing seems to have the same simplicity that the other elements do. Do you think any of the ones that I have listed are good enough to use, or do you have any new ideas? Thank you.
Storm and Charge are two that haven't been suggested yet. You could also call it ohm, amp, coulomb, or volt. (but you already said volt...) Depending on the mythos of your world, you could just name it after some fictitious deity, magician, or other person, like sky fire orFrank's fire, or just Franks for short. (Just throwing it out there.)
Or, go with the Final Fantasy solution: Call it thunder.

I think Spark is a great one. Its quick and comes off the tongue with purpose.
I was thinking maybe something like "Current." ?
Well, that's what I'm currently working with. Perhaps I'll keep it. Thanks.
Ah, but current could also refer to the flow of water. Still, it's a good thought. Thanks for the input.
I usually stick with Lightning, myself.

I thought of some of those, but nothing seemed to sound right to me. Thanks for the ideas though.
I may end up going with Voltage after all.
Puns are fun! So are rhymes! Thanks for the input!
