I am sure it is transient; we wrote an awful lot of words today--but Naperville, as of 9 pm on Saturday, November 14th, is in the lead by a slim 33 words vs. Birmingham-West Midlands and by 319 words vs. Belgium 'n Holland!

Hey, how come I never seem to be using my keyboard in any of these pictures? Weird, huh? Perhaps I've mastered the technique of mind-melding my thoughts to my computer files, enabling even more impressive wordcounts than last year!

To update your wordcount on the site (use this Edit your novel info link), just fill in your wordcount (which you need to calculate on your own--MS Word has a wordcount function) in the box and submit:

Also, dont forget to join our local forum or our jabber chat room if you find the NaNo server too frustrating.

Tim and I met at Panera--we discussed details for the various pre-November events, with the idea that attending all three will help people start on track.
So we're focusing on plot and characters for the kick-off, then timeline, location, setting for the 10/18 and opening scene, final scene for the 10/23 event with plot twists and other ways we can help each other with our 2008 NaNoWriMo projects.
Hope to see lots of people at the events!

If you're sitting at a sandwich or coffee place in the next two months, consider having a sign about NaNoWriMo next to you--and a -- ask me questions note.
Here's the 2008 flyer:
http://naperwrimo.org/wiki/index.php?title=2008_Flyer

Feel free to talk up the planning events and the write-ins.

Stephanie, I've e-mailed a reply to you. In general, yes, NaNoWriMo is very scary. Writing 50,000 words for fun in November (arguably one of the busiest months of the year) without getting a grade for it or getting paid for it (well, at least not right away ;-) is a daunting prospect for many... Then you have to consider how much you want to finally write and complete a book and how the deadlines and warm and welcoming community (both in the forums online and in the regional events) will help you cross that finish line...

I would say "Go for it!" -- after all, it's not nearly as dangerous as sky diving :-)
