Usually we wait till late November to tell people about the the Journey; however, we have an unusual situation for ourselves. It was due to a combination of ambition (we embarked on two Anthologies and one Chapter Book) and personal circumstances (several Journeyers had to drop out when life dealt unexpected blows) that we've missed out on our original deadlines and find ourselves in need of a new schedule.

What is the Journey?
The Journey is the year-round writing group (well, really January-September) that is associated with our Illinois::Naperville region. Last year we published our first anthology of short stories: Infinite Monkeys. We have some social outings, some writing meetings and meet regularly in our regional jabber chat room.

About the Anthologies
Here are the steps of the schedule (dates to be determined). We're thinking to carry over the Anthologies and invite new participants so that we will have enough stories (each story is limited to 5,000 words). Anyone interested in joining us? Send me nanomail.

  • Cover art ideas discussed
  • Second drafts available for review.
  • Everyone gives detailed comments on two other stories
  • Third revision due.
  • Cover art available for review.
  • Everyone reads whatever stories they haven't read yet and give minor comments to the authors and looks at the cover art.
  • Final version given to editor.
  • Final version cover art given to editor.
  • Editor puts the Anthology together and creates a pdf file, which is made available for review by the authors.
  • Any last minute (minor) changes given to editor.
  • Order proof copy.
  • Any minor changes, order second proof.
  • Review proof and order copies.

Some quick highlights from the first Journey meeting (for those who might be discovering this late and might be interested in joining us--it's never too late to join the Journey (though not all paths can be followed--the Anthologies will have some deadlines):

  • We've decided to continue Anthology 2 and Anthology 1
  • We'll be alternating social and writing-related events each month. Heather is organizing the first month's social event for February (a lunch at an area Chinese restaurant) and Paula is organizing a March writing event.
  • We're talking about doing a writer's retreat some time (I'm envisioning a three day/two night rental of a house somewhere...)
  • Several writing conferences have been discussed
  • Katherine and Heather will organize an Editing workshop for early February
  • We're going to augment jabber with skype so authors can read aloud some of their work for comment.
  • I've installed a wordpress instance for the Journey to use, including a discussion forum (this will augment usage of the wiki)

Interested? Intrigued? NaNoMail me for details...

Those who have access to the wiki (and everyone should--if you don't please contact me ASAP), should RSVP for the first Journey meeting here.

Members should also copy their Members Profile entry to the 2011 section of the Members page.

You probably have my name on the sign-in sheet from the TGIO party, but I'll mention it here to be safe. Please add me to the list

Okay,

I think I've worked through my writers block issues, so I'm offically tossing my hat back into the ring.

I've been contacting those who reply here by NaNoMail. To answer questions:

  • Our first meeting will be January 8th (Saturday), 11:45 AM in the Naperville Municipal Center (bring your lunch)
  • When and where will we meet after that? That depends on those who are part of the Journey in 2011...
  • We will offer again the Finding Your Writer's Voice workshop in January (probably January 22nd)

What have I done?

Is it a problem if I'm out of town for a week in January?

Sounds good to me...My schedule is a bit chaotic, but it would be great to have some deadlines and peer pressure to keep me on track for writing after NaNoWriMo.

With just six days left in this November, it is time for folks to be thinking whether they want to participate in the Journey, the Naperville region's year-round writing group. It is up to the group each year to set its own goals. In the past we've been a big critique engine (though I don't recommend that route anymore--Katherine's approach of using http://critiquecircle.com works better for that), focused on short story writing and made plans for a book of sample chapters from our nano novels (this is short enough to handle intra-group critiquing). Katherine also has an idea to hold regular write-ins this coming year; and, of course, there is the social aspect of the group.

Whether you're an existing member of the Journey and want to rejoin or are a newly interested nonmember who would like to join, let us know by posting here.

Thanks!
